Global

There is no clean free source for worldwide manufacturer market share (OICA stopped its by-manufacturer production table after 2017). For the "who builds the most cars worldwide" question, see our vehicle-sales ranking (Toyota leads, ahead of the Volkswagen Group and Hyundai-Kia).

My take
On its home market the Volkswagen Group is actually extending its dominance, taking more than 40 percent of all new cars. At the same time Tesla's share halves and BYD grows eightfold from a tiny base. Germany is still a German fortress, but the first cracks are showing.

Methodology

New passenger-car registrations per group for full-year 2025, raw data from Germany's Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) by brand, aggregated here into groups (same method as AUTO BILD). Share = group sum divided by the total market (2.86 million). The change compares the 2025 share with 2024 in percentage points. KBA reports Cupra under Seat, it is included in the VW group. Mercedes-Benz here includes Smart. The largest groups are shown.
