Global

There is no clean free source for worldwide manufacturer market share (OICA stopped its by-manufacturer production table after 2017). For the "who builds the most cars worldwide" question, see our vehicle-sales ranking (Toyota leads, ahead of the Volkswagen Group and Hyundai-Kia).

My take
The real winner is Geely, which grew its share by half in a single year and pushed the Volkswagen Group off second place. BYD leads but is losing domestic ground for the first time, as the price war bites and growth shifts to exports. The Western makers keep sliding.

Methodology

Passenger-car retail sales per group for full-year 2025, all powertrains, source China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), reproduced by CnEVPost. Share = group sales divided by the passenger-car retail market (about 23.7 million, excluding exports). CPCA ranks by sales unit; the foreign groups (VW, Toyota) are combined here across their two China joint ventures. SAIC cannot be cleanly consolidated as a parent (joint-venture double-counting), so SAIC-GM-Wuling stands as its own unit. The change compares the 2025 share with 2024.
